At 11 Curtis made his first short film, went on learning about performing arts and soon became his school’s go-to videographer. After some contemplation and research, he has decided to incorporate his first business and provide video services to other schools too.
This story of peer to peer learning offers a rare glimpse into Chris’ truly unique classroom. You might think you’ve wandered into a classroom of a Montessori school, however this wonderful land of learning-by-doing exist as an island-of-refuge within the well conformed, regulated and some might say corrupted sea of public school classrooms.

As a child growing up in a home with family violence, Brisbane author Jas Rawlinson often felt alone, fearful, and uncertain. After struggling through her teens, losing her dad to suicide, and then experiencing sexual assault at age 20, she fell deeper and deeper into depression. Often, suicide felt like the only way out. But in the back of her mind, there was a small flicker of hope; a desire to one day help others so that they didn’t have to suffer the same traumas alone. Slowly, Jas began to regain control of her life, and explore her passions, eventually becoming a freelance journalist, the founder of Brisbane’s first domestic violence memorial, and the author of the suicide prevention book ‘Reasons to Live One More Day, Every Day.’
Kylie had a rough childhood, followed by an extremely traumatic domestic violence relationship. Many times she suffered from suicidal thoughts, and was constantly on the run or seeking refuge in women’s shelters. Tragically, Kylie lost both her father and brother to suicide, but has risen from the ashes and turned her life around; creating an incredible and purposeful life that now inspires many others. As a child, I was lonely.
At 17, I decided to embark on what I termed a life-apprenticeship and, in addition, believing I was bored, which, I much later realised, was driven by a deep loneliness, this search for fulfilment manifested in two ways:
1. Hedonism; and,
2. Significantly helping others especially through systems.
My life-apprenticeship and ‘boredom’ drew me to warzones – as a humanitarian aid worker, I went to Iraq and Liberia.
However, Liberia deeply traumatized me. In retrospect, it scratched at other unresolved/unbeknown issues in my childhood.
Eventually, I wrote.
Typical start up journey although MiVote is a not for profit. Start with an impossible idea. Test it with experts in the market (who all said it wasn’t possible). Refine and hone the details and model anyway.
Launch to much skepticism. A few years later find myself as a guest speaker at the Stanford, World Economic Forum (Davos), March for Our Lives (Houston), World’s Top 50 Innovators Conference (London). Met with multiple head of State, politicians, billionaires, community leaders along the way.
MiVote now on four continents and may have elected reps in the next 8 weeks.
My autistic son changed the trajectory of my life.
Raising him in a world not ready to embrace his differences inspired me to help others understand the needs of children, parents & teachers dealing with autism.
After a heartbreaking bullying incident at school, I chose to speak directly to my son’s peers via a YouTube video asking them to be kind. This received a huge response & reached his peers.
I then wrote a book, but it wasn’t enough, I wanted to provide a solution.
We all crave a sense of belonging and want to feel connected. The MATES programmes were created based on this premise.
